The 8.371 km Tauern railway tunnel on the Tauernbahn line between Böckstein (Salzburg) and Mallnitz (Carinthia) was fully closed for about nine months from mid-November 2024 for extensive renovation (new tunnel-lining waterproofing, renewed drainage, mostly concrete track bed). On 14 July 2025 the line reopened for passenger and freight traffic; the Böckstein–Mallnitz car shuttle (Autoschleuse) had already resumed limited service from 5 July 2025. About EUR 110 million has been invested so far, with a second construction phase (approx. EUR 50 million, focused on the southern portal) planned for the first half of 2027.
