ÖBB has been strengthening the piers of the Mauthausen Danube bridge since August 2025 (four river piers, three floodplain piers and two abutments) so that the provinces of Upper Austria and Lower Austria can replace the road bridge superstructure in 2028. The work on land is finished, two of the four piers in the river are done and the third is due by the end of 2026, while work on the fourth starts in early 2027 with completion planned by 2028. So far about 4,000 cubic metres of concrete and nearly 600 tonnes of reinforcing steel have been used; the construction contract for the superstructure replacement has been awarded and first work is due to start this autumn. The date is a placeholder: the article gives only the year 2028 for the last pier. (LOK Report, 2 Sep 2026)
