The 15.4 km twin-tube Ceneri Base Tunnel forms the southern end of the NEAT axis, linking the Gotthard Base Tunnel to the Ticino rail network between Camorino and Vezia. Technically opened on 4 September 2020, it entered regular commercial service on 13 December 2020; construction costs rose from an initial CHF 1.2 billion (single-tube variant) to about CHF 3.6 billion for the realized twin-tube solution. The tunnel cuts travel time between Locarno and Lugano from 55 to 22 minutes and enables 200-250 trains daily and up to 40 million tonnes of freight per year.
