- Sweden discusses introducing the euro – Trump geopolitics as a trigger
Because of Trump's geopolitical realignment and increasing European uncertainty, a historic debate is underway in Sweden about introducing the euro and moving away from the Swedish krona. The step would be historic: Sweden has been an EU member since 1995 but has not introduced the euro so far following a failed referendum in 2003. Introducing the euro would significantly deepen Sweden's economic and political integration into Europe.
Sweden formally meets the Maastricht criteria for introducing the euro. The political hurdle has so far been the 2003 referendum, in which the population voted against the euro. The changed geopolitical situation (Trump's foreign policy, Russian threat, strengthening of the EU as a security actor) as well as Sweden's recent NATO accession (2024) strengthen the arguments for deeper European integration. A referendum or parliamentary initiative would be necessary for introduction.
