RFI opens four-track Voltri–Sampierdarena line in Genoa

On 6 October 2025 the two new tracks of Genoa's Nodo di Genova were inaugurated, making the Voltri–Sampierdarena coastal line four-track over about 8.5 km. The new tracks take long-distance and freight trains off the lines used by local services; to achieve this, the Doria–Monte Gazzo tunnel was extended eastwards and the roughly 3 km Polcevera tunnel was linked to the Succursale dei Giovi line. Intercity and freight trains have used them since 7 October 2025, and a later connection to the Terzo Valico dei Giovi is meant to let freight run directly from Pra' port to Milan; RFI is the client and a general contractor led by Webuild did the construction.
