Event
On 15 May 2026 Trafikverket and Stena Line sign the first agreement of its kind, securing rail ferry traffic between Trelleborg and Rostock until 31 December 2031

Sweden's only regular rail ferry (Stena Line, since 1998 with M/S Skåne and M/S Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) is kept for freight that cannot use the Öresund route because of weight and width limits, as a fallback route and for military mobility; the report gives no financial terms.

Trafikverket and Stena Line signed the first agreement of its kind at Trelleborg on 15 May 2026, securing rail ferry traffic between Trelleborg and Rostock until 31 December 2031; the Swedish state is stepping in because ferry traffic has fallen sharply since the Öresund Bridge opened, owing to weak profitability. Stena Line has run the route since 1998 with two rail ferries and it is Sweden's only regular rail ferry link. The ferries carry freight that cannot use the Öresund route because of weight and width limits, serve as a fallback during longer disruptions and, according to Trafikverket, support military mobility for the armed forces and NATO; the report gives no terms.
