Proposal for a new Standardisation Regulation

Average time to develop a standard to fall from six to four years; Parliament and Council must agree

On 06.10.2026 the European Commission proposed a new Standardisation Regulation: clearer deadlines for the standards it requests, common specifications as a targeted fallback, the involvement of other standardisation bodies where needs are urgent or highly specialised, and an Expert Centre on European Standardisation. The Commission estimates that the average time to develop a standard will fall from six to four years; Parliament and Council will now examine the proposal (European Commission, press release, 06.10.2026).
