APG builds EUR 38 million Leoben substation, operational by end-2026

· Energy / power grid

Location
Leoben (Styria) · 🇦🇹 Austria
Project
Leoben substation (220/110 kV) within the 'Neue Anbindung Leoben' project
Investment
approx. EUR 38 million
Status
Under construction (commissioning planned for end of 2026)

In February 2026 APG delivered the 230-tonne 220/110 kV transformer for the new Leoben substation: built by Siemens Energy in Weiz, the unit travelled by rail to the voestalpine works site in Donawitz, where it was transferred to a special vehicle that carried it about 2.5 km by road to the substation. By June 2026 the transformer is to be fully fitted out and connected to the switchgear. The substation links APG's extra-high-voltage grid to the distribution grid of Energienetze Steiermark and forms part of the 'Neue Anbindung Leoben' project, which also includes adapting the Hessenberg substation and an optimised 220 kV line connection; it is meant to allow the local steel industry to switch to electricity-based production. APG is investing about EUR 38 million. The date is a placeholder: the article gives only the end of 2026 for commissioning, so 31 December 2026 is used. (LOK Report, 26 Feb 2026)
