Commissioned in 1937, SBB's Etzelwerk pumped-storage plant in Altendorf, Canton Schwyz (121 MW, about 250 GWh of 16.7 Hz railway traction power per year) is reaching the end of its concession and service life after roughly 80 years of operation. According to SBB, Etzelwerk is, together with the Ritom plant, one of the first facilities to be modernized under a roughly CHF 500 million renewal programme for SBB's hydropower plants; a new substation is also being built at the site. SBB's source does not give an exact completion date; the project list assumes 2030.
