Project
Completion of the A9 motorway in Valais (Sierre–Gamsen section)
Investment
approx. CHF 2.27 billion (96% federal government, 4% canton Valais)
Status
Under construction (several sub-sections already opened, core Pfynwald section still under construction/delayed)

The roughly 31 km A9 section between Sierre and Gamsen in Valais, largely running underground, is the largest remaining piece of Switzerland's A9 at about CHF 2.27 billion. Several sub-sections are already open or about to open (Eyholz tunnel/Visp east bypass since 2018, Visp west since June 2025, Raron–Visp autumn 2025, Gampel–Raron 2026), but the core section through the Pfynwald forest has been delayed beyond 2030 due to technical and ecological complications. Update (24.02.2026): According to a report by the Swiss Federal Audit Office, 2037 is the target for completing the A9 in Upper Valais, where the Riedberg and Pfynwald sections are still missing; 31.12.2037 is a placeholder because only the year is known (Canal9, 24.02.2026: https://canal9.ch/de/2037-eine-zahl-die-die-herzen-aller-autobahnliebhaberinnen-hoher-schlagen-lasst/).
