Terminal 1 of the new Istanbul Airport was designed by a European architecture consortium: Grimshaw (UK) led concept and schematic design, supported by Nordic Office of Architecture (Norway) and Haptic Architects (UK/Norway); Scott Brownrigg (UK) handled delivery design together with Grimshaw. Masterplanning for the entire six-runway complex was done by Arup (UK). The construction/operating consortium (Cengiz, Kolin, Limak, MAPA, Kalyon / IGA) is purely Turkish.

The new Istanbul Airport (IGA) on the Black Sea coast opened on 29 October 2018 and, with roughly 1 million sqm of terminal space, is one of the largest airport terminals in the world (eventual capacity up to 200 million passengers/year). Construction and operation rest with a purely Turkish consortium; Phase 1 cost about EUR 6 billion. The terminal architecture and masterplanning, however, came from a European team: Grimshaw, Scott Brownrigg and Arup (all UK) plus Nordic Office of Architecture and Haptic Architects (Norway/UK).
