France's Alstom is supplying 70 six-car Metropolis metro trains to the Toronto Transit Commission; design and engineering take place in Canada, with final assembly at Alstom's Thunder Bay plant (Ontario) and testing at its Kingston site (Ontario).
On 15 January 2026 Alstom reached an agreement worth CAD 2.3 billion (approx. EUR 1.4 billion) with the Toronto Transit Commission for 70 six-car Metropolis metro trains, with options for up to 150 further trainsets. Fifty-five trains will replace the ageing fleet on Line 2, while the remaining 15 are earmarked for the Line 1 Yonge North and Line 2 Scarborough extensions. Alstom says the deal will create up to 945 direct jobs in Canada (over 600 at Alstom itself) plus more than 1,700 indirect jobs, using Canadian carbon steel and aluminium among other inputs.
