Alstom (France) is supplying 28 Avelia Liberty high-speed trainsets ("NextGen Acela") under a roughly $2 billion contract signed in 2016, for service on the Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C., New York, and Boston. The trains are based on TGV/Pendolino technology, with final assembly at Alstom's Hornell, New York plant. The fleet has been in revenue service since August 2025, with full delivery expected by 2027. (The separate yard-modernization projects in Boston/New York/Washington, due to finish by 2029/2030, were instead awarded to US construction joint ventures with no identified European involvement.)
The Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C., New York, and Boston is the busiest rail line in the US; through 2030 both a new fleet rollout and maintenance-yard modernizations in Boston, New York, and Washington are underway. The new "NextGen Acela" trains (Avelia Liberty) were designed and built by French company Alstom (2016 contract, ~$2 billion), with final assembly in Hornell, NY, and have been in service since August 2025.
