Vantaa builds new light rail line to Helsinki Airport

The new 17.9 km light rail line with 25 stations will connect Mellunkylä via Hakunila, Tikkurila and Aviapolis to Helsinki Airport. Vantaa city council approved the project on 22 May 2023, and construction began in June 2025 (including preparatory tunnel works at Tikkurila station), with completion projected for 2029. The estimated 2025 investment volume is about EUR 750 million, funded by the city of Vantaa, the Finnish government, the HSY environmental authority and the city of Helsinki.
