Dublin Port announced on 9 October 2025 that, together with Irish Rail, it has invested EUR 9 million in the North Wall rail freight yard, which will take over all rail freight while works are under way on Alexandra Road and can add capacity if demand grows. The roughly 18-month refurbishment renews the run-down road and track for heavier axle loads and adds a new lorry route, a pedestrian and cycle path and replacement utility lines, including for EirGrid's Powering Up Dublin project; the direct rail connection into the port is due to reopen in 2027. According to the port, it is the biggest rail freight investment by an Irish port in ten years. The date is a placeholder: the article names only 2027, so 31 December 2027 is used.
