BioNTech to close Marburg production plant by 2027

As part of the group restructuring, BioNTech is closing its Marburg production plant by the end of 2027; around 540 jobs are being cut. The background is the sharply declined demand for coronavirus vaccines. Cross-reference: the roughly 540 jobs are included in the up to 1,860 jobs of the group restructuring announced the same day (layoffs entry of 5 May 2026); the figure is carried there and set to null here to avoid double counting. Update (28.09.2026): The search for buyers failed; BioNTech confirmed the closure and now gives early 2028 as the end date for Marburg (Tübingen end of 2027, Idar-Oberstein end of 2028; about 1,800 employees in total), citing a difficult market and investment climate (ZDFheute, 28.09.2026).
