The railway line between Ringsted and Nykøbing Falster is being double-tracked and electrified; its centerpiece is the new Storstrøm railway bridge, replacing the old single-track bridge at Masnedsund, which Banedanmark and the Danish Transport Authority expect to be ready for rail traffic in 2026 (it opened for road traffic already in 2024). The line is part of the roughly 115 km Ringsted-Femern railway, serving as the approach line to the Fehmarn Belt tunnel (planned opening 2029); once complete, electric trains will run between Næstved and Nykøbing Falster.
