U.S. Steel Košice invests €900m in electric arc furnace

Slovakia's largest steel producer USSK has approved an investment programme of about €900m for a new electric arc furnace with a capacity of about 1.6 million tonnes a year and an air separation unit. The furnace is due to start in 2030 and run alongside the blast furnaces to cut CO₂ emissions significantly; two grant agreements with the environment ministry, for about €350m for the furnace and €40m for the air separation unit, are signed.
