Deutsche Bahn electrified the roughly 22-kilometre single-track line between Wesel and Bocholt (stations at Dingden, Blumenkamp, Hamminkeln), which went into operation with new overhead catenary in early February 2022. The works also modernised 19 level crossings, 1,500 metres of track and four switches, raised platforms to 76 cm, and increased the top speed between Wesel and Hamminkeln from 80 to 100 km/h. Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL), Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and Deutsche Bahn jointly invested around EUR 50 million; the originally listed source URL (bauprojekte.deutschebahn.com) returned a 404, so a working replacement source was used.
