The roughly 73 km Cologne–Aachen line (part of the Cologne–Brussels–London high-speed corridor, with around 260 trains passing through the Aachen area daily) is being fully renewed under Deutsche Bahn's high-performance-network overhaul programme: tracks and switches, signalling/safety technology including ETCS, level crossings, bridges (including four bridges in Cologne), retaining walls, overhead line and several stations will be renovated or modernised, with additional passing tracks added. The roughly five-month full closure is planned for the second half of 2029 (22 June to 7 December 2029); the project is still in the planning phase and no specific investment volume has been published yet.
