As part of Deutsche Bahn's nationwide "Generalsanierung Hochleistungsnetz" programme, the left-bank Rhine line between Cologne/Hürth-Kalscheuren and Koblenz/Mainz is being overhauled. The core Cologne–Remagen section (84 km, 35 km of it in North Rhine-Westphalia) is scheduled by DB to be fully closed for about five months from February to July 2028; on the Brühl–Bonn Hbf sub-section (37 km) three new electronic interlockings and a radio block centre are being built, including preparatory measures for future ETCS equipment, with operations to be controlled from a digital control centre in Bonn. Deutsche Bahn has not yet disclosed an investment volume; the project is still in the planning phase (planning documents due in 2026, interlocking construction from 2027, commissioning in 2028).
