Würzburg's main railway station was modernized as part of an accessibility upgrade costing roughly EUR 32 million, funded by the federal government, the State of Bavaria and Deutsche Bahn. Platforms 1-4 became barrier-free in time for the 2018 State Garden Show, with platforms 5 and 6 following in 2021; all platforms received new elevators, flooring, roofs and modern lighting/speaker systems via a new platform underpass. The project's overall official completion was reported for September 17, 2022, after which the old platform underpass was demolished.
