The Ammertal railway (Herrenberg–Tübingen) and Ermstal railway (Tübingen/Metzingen–Bad Urach) were electrified between 2019 and 2022 as part of the Neckar-Alb regional light rail project (15 kV 16.7 Hz AC). Because the signaling technology was not yet ready, trains initially ran only hourly; continuous 30-minute service became possible only once the new electronic interlockings in Metzingen and Dettingen-Gsaidt went into operation with the December 2025 timetable change. Module 1 of the overall project had an investment volume of about EUR 122 million for electrification and upgrade of both lines.
