Since 2013, the Leipzig rail hub has been rebuilt as part of the major "Verkehrsprojekt Deutsche Einheit Nr. 8" project (515 km of new/upgraded lines Nuremberg-Erfurt-Halle/Leipzig-Berlin), including new entry/exit tracks at the main station toward Halle/Erfurt and Berlin; construction is scheduled to run until 2025. The 2nd construction phase comprised about six kilometers of new track, 32 switches and 20 signals, with a cost volume of roughly EUR 220 million.
