On the night of 11 December 2022, ETCS Level 2 went into operation for the first time on a heavily used part of the German rail network: the roughly 30 km stretch of the Main-Neckar railway between Darmstadt Süd and Laudenbach (Bergstraße). The section is controlled from the ETCS control centre (Radio Block Center) at Darmstadt-Eberstadt and forms part of the cross-border Rhine-Alpine Corridor between Rotterdam and Genoa. It initially runs as an isolated island, since neighbouring sections are still equipped only with the conventional PZB train-protection system.
