Status

Deutsche Bahn is adding a second pair of tracks along roughly 13 km of the right-bank Rhine line between Troisdorf and Bonn-Oberkassel, including new stops at Bonn-Vilich and Bonn-Ramersdorf, to extend S-Bahn line S13 on a 20-minute frequency to Cologne/Bonn Airport. The 8 km northern section Troisdorf–Bonn-Beuel will be completed in December 2026 — two years ahead of the original schedule — while main construction on the southern section to Bonn-Oberkassel is not expected to start before 2030. Total project cost was put at roughly EUR 750 million as of 2022. Update (14 Nov 2025): For the S 13 pilot service starting in December 2026, the main committee of go.Rheinland recommends a staged approach: the target variant is a half-hourly service from Bonn-Beuel via Troisdorf and Cologne/Bonn Airport to Cologne, with an interim concept at first that includes the temporary line S 27 (hourly Troisdorf–Bonn-Beuel). The report gives no date for the switch to the target variant, partly because a DB InfraGO operating-programme study is still outstanding. The planned 20-minute service Düren–Bonn-Beuel requires expansion of the Cologne S-Bahn hub and a flyover structure at Troisdorf; the second expansion stage to Bonn-Oberkassel is to be ready for the 2032 target network.
