Section 7 (Appenweier–Kenzingen) of the Karlsruhe–Basel Rhine Valley railway expansion is about 46.5 km long and splits into planning-approval sections PfA 7.1 (Appenweier–Hohberg) and PfA 7.2–7.4 (Hohberg–Kenzingen). Its centerpiece is an approximately 11 km tunnel near Offenburg, used mainly for freight traffic to cut noise, while the existing Rhine Valley line south of Offenburg is upgraded for speeds up to 250 km/h. Deutsche Bahn has been planning this new alignment since 2016; per the source list, completion is targeted for 2035, though the project website states no specific investment cost figures.
