In its latest 'State of Mozilla' report, Mozilla presents a strategy against AI monopolies: trustworthy, open-source AI without data collection. The organization casts itself as the head of a 'Rebel Alliance' of open-source developers, activists and researchers. Goal: AI as a tool for people, not for control or surveillance. 20% of the planned 2026 spending (approx. $130 million) goes into the development of trustworthy, open AI.
Mozilla has USD 1.4bn in reserves (debt-free). 2024 revenue from Firefox search-engine deals: around USD 658.5m. 80% of spending (around USD 520m) goes into core products such as Firefox and Thunderbird. Mozilla has already invested in more than 50 start-ups with a similar philosophy. Three focus points: human agency (self-determined AI use), open source (transparency against 'black boxes'), public benefit (technology for the common good). Roadmap: integrate privacy-preserving AI features into products; tools that make open-source integration easier for developers instead of expensive cloud platforms.
