Along the 17.5 km S-Bahn line Hamburg-Altona – Hamburg-Blankenese – Wedel (line S1), DB InfraGO is building a new rectifier station in Wedel for the traction power supply and replacing the existing six mechanical signal boxes with three electronic interlockings (ESTW) in western Hamburg-Altona, Hamburg-Blankenese and Wedel. Between Klein Flottbek and Wedel the digital train-control system ETCS Level 2 without signals (ETCS L2oS) combined with Automatic Train Operation (ATO) is also being introduced, and Hamburg-Sülldorf station is getting a barrier-free pedestrian bridge in place of today's level crossing. Per the project list, completion is planned for end of 2027; DB itself currently lists the project status as "in construction phases".
