The first construction stage of the double-track expansion of the Stendal–Uelzen railway line comprised the Hohenwulsch–Brunau-Packebusch and Rademin–Salzwedel sections, together about 21 km long, at an estimated cost of roughly EUR 57 million. The Hohenwulsch–Brunau-Packebusch section entered service in October 2017 (the second section, Rademin–Salzwedel, followed at the end of 2018); construction had begun in late 2014, with commissioning delayed by planning errors at level crossings. The expansion is part of the larger "Ostkorridor" (East Corridor) project for continuous double-tracking between Uelzen and Stendal, whose overall completion is planned for 2028.
