DB delays step-free rebuild of Kaufbeuren station to 2028
- Location
- Kaufbeuren, Bavaria · 🇩🇪 Germany
- Project
- Step-free rebuild of Kaufbeuren station (demolition and rebuilding of all platforms, pedestrian underpass, three lifts)
- Investment
- not specified
- Status
- Under construction; outer platforms end of 2026, step-free access spring 2027, central platform 2028
The step-free rebuild of Kaufbeuren station is running late (position as of 22 July 2026): the two new outer platforms are to enter service at the end of 2026 and be usable without steps once the lifts are finished in spring 2027, while the new central platform will probably follow only in 2028 and depends on available track possessions; step-free access had previously been planned for July (outer platforms) and November 2026 (central platform). The reasons are much more difficult ground conditions, with groundwater that had not been surveyed, existing cables missing from the utility records and delays at the external design firm. All platforms are being demolished and rebuilt (uniformly 76 cm above rail level for level boarding), and the project adds three lifts, a new pedestrian underpass and two inclined accesses to tracks 1 and 4; DB gives no investment figure. The date is a placeholder: only 2028 is given for the central platform, and 31 December 2028 is used. (LOK Report, 22 Jul 2026)
