The reconstruction of the Berlin Palace rebuilt the historic baroque facades while the interior now houses the modern Humboldt Forum museum and cultural centre at Schlossplatz in Berlin-Mitte. The opening originally planned for 14 September 2019 (Alexander von Humboldt's 250th birthday) was delayed by defects in building services and fire protection; the first partial opening took place on 16 December 2020 and the second on 20 July 2021. The Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning puts total costs at around EUR 682 million; the 22,500 square metres of reconstructed facade required 2,828 sandstone sculptural pieces, made possible by donations.
