The roughly 12.6 km third and final construction section of the A33 between the Bielefeld interchange (A2) and Borgholzhausen was opened in two stages: the eastern part between Künsebeck and Halle (Westphalia) on 11 January 2019, and the remaining stretch to Borgholzhausen on 18 November 2019. This completed the decades-long A33 gap closure (together with the first two sections opened in 2012 and 2018); the cost of this final section was around EUR 140 million, of which over EUR 30 million went toward nature, environmental and species protection measures (including green bridges through the Tatenhauser Wald forest).
