Deutsche Bahn plans extensive renovation and expansion works at Heidelberg Central Station starting in 2026, including a fundamental modernization of the station building, which is considered in need of refurbishment. According to Wikipedia, construction is scheduled to be completed by 2031; a total investment figure for the overall project has not been made public. In 2021, EUR 580,000 from an economic stimulus program was already allocated for station maintenance (including the transverse platform), and the signal box there is described as failure-prone (repeated outages in 2025). Update (5 May 2026): DB InfraGO will renovate the listed station building from October 2026, with DB and the federal government investing about EUR 100 million together. Plans include a roofed atrium in the inner courtyard, a new west wing and a municipal bicycle car park with more than 800 spaces; the station is due to be fully usable again from early 2031. Temporary container facilities on the forecourt are to open in early October 2026 (LOK Report, 5 May 2026).
