The port of Straubing-Sand officially put its new combined transport terminal into operation on 30 September 2025 together with Parliamentary State Secretary Ulrich Lange, after more than 20 years of lead time from land purchase to planning approval and a short construction phase. Containers are transferred between road and rail on more than 50,000 m²; the terminal is meant to handle up to ten trains a week, has storage space for 1,000 TEU, can take 650 m full-length trains and creates up to 20 jobs. The operator is Contargo CombiTrac Straubing-Sand GmbH, a joint venture of Contargo and SFI; the federal government funds the project with about EUR 19 million, roughly 79% of the eligible total investment. The chairman of the port's supervisory board calls on DB InfraGO to upgrade the line equipment promptly so that trains are not held back by missing track infrastructure or old signalling technology.
