Geestferkel GmbH, one of Germany's largest producers of breeding piglets and fattening pigs with some 25,000 sows, filed for insolvency on 29 July 2026. It directly affects 188 employees as well as numerous suppliers and livestock at several sites. The company blames sharply fallen producer prices, steeply increased costs and a lack of future prospects: piglets currently fetch around €30 and fattening pigs about €1.40 per kilogram, producing losses of more than €25 per piglet and well over €50 per fattening pig. According to the company, revenues were at times not even enough to pay for feed, water and electricity. Update (5 August 2026): according to the preliminary insolvency administration, almost all of the more than 25 sites have been handed over to new operators, who now run the barns on their own account and cover the running costs for staff, feed, veterinary care and energy, securing the animals' care at those locations. Geestferkel continues to run eight facilities itself. Initial stocktaking showed, insolvency adviser André Zimmermann said, that several operations were already in a markedly strained state when the proceedings began — some lacked operating supplies, repairs had been left undone, and a few sites had substantial backlogs in slurry removal. Vets found no specific undersupply or actual threat to animal welfare on the findings so far. Official livestock figures are now available: around 29,000 sows and gilts, 52,000 suckling piglets, 90,000 older piglets and 32,551 fattening pigs. Source: top agrar, 5 August 2026.
