Warnemünde station was rebuilt starting September 2018: the non-barrier-free pedestrian underpass was replaced by a level crossing in the northern part of the station, and two new 370-meter long-distance platforms (tracks 4 and 5) were built. The centerpiece was the switch to a digital interlocking (DSTW) for the Rostock-Bramow–Warnemünde section (21 switches, 66 signals) — the first DSTW in Germany also controlling long-distance rail traffic; commissioning happened in phases in September 2019 and finally in May 2020. Federal government, state, city and Deutsche Bahn invested approximately EUR 65 million in the project.
