In Bremen's Oberneuland district, three at-grade level crossings on the Bremen–Hamburg railway line (Franz-Schütte-Allee, Auf der Heide, Mühlenfeldstraße) were replaced with road underpasses (trough structures). The first two tunnels opened to traffic in 2016, while the final and largest one at Mühlenfeldstraße was ceremonially opened to traffic on 20 May 2019. The project was carried out by Deutsche Bahn AG and Bremen's Office for Streets and Traffic, cost around EUR 53 million in total, and took about six years to build (with a planning history spanning over 30 years).
