Deutsche Bahn has modernised Wanne-Eickel main station in Herne from top to bottom and opened it with a ceremony on 3 November 2025; VRR (the Rhine-Ruhr transport association) and DB invested around €25 million through Modernisation Offensive 3. All four platforms (220 to 390 m long, with about 9,500 m² of new paving, still 76 cm high for step-free boarding) were rebuilt, along with two weather shelters, a roof about 30 m long over the platform for tracks 1/2 and a redesigned pedestrian underpass with new stairs and a tactile guidance system. The station becomes Herne-Wanne-Eickel Hbf at the timetable change on 14 December 2025; renovation of the station building (federal FABB3 programme) and a project by the city of Herne for the surrounding area are planned next.
