- The regional assembly of Verband Region Stuttgart (VRS) decides on 25 March 2026 that the region will own the trains for the new S-Bahn contract from 2032 and lease them to the future operator
From the current fleet the VRS takes over at least the 56 newest Class 430 units; the new S-Bahn contract is to be tendered for 1 July 2032 at the earliest, and one regional councillor put the contract volume at about two billion euros.
On 25 March 2026 the VRS regional assembly chose an ownership model for the S-Bahn contract starting in 2032: the appointed operator procures the trains to the region's specification, transfers them to the association and leases them back for the term of the contract, including operation and maintenance. From today's fleet the VRS will take over at least the 56 newest Class 430 trains. Re-tendering is planned for 1 July 2032 at the earliest, and one regional councillor spoke of a volume of around two billion euros (LOK Report, 26 Mar 2026).
