The insolvent St Elisabeth Hospital in Salzgitter-Bad (108 beds, part of the Elisabeth Vinzenz Verbund) will cease operations on 30 September 2026; about 250 employees were told at an extraordinary staff meeting on 28 September. After the insolvency filing on 26 February 2026 and the opening of self-administered proceedings on 1 May 2026, there were interested parties but no binding takeover offer; the hospital cites uncertainty from the hospital reform, rising costs with inadequate reimbursement and heavy investment needs. Remaining patients were transferred, and a citizens' alliance and the mayor are protesting (kma Online, 28.09.2026; t-online, 29.09.2026). Update (7 Oct 2026): According to Ärzteblatt, all patients were to be transferred by the evening of 28 Sep 2026, the hospital had withdrawn from emergency care and ceased operations at the end of the month; the closure is thus complete (Ärzteblatt, 28 Sep 2026).
