Sparda-Bank West eG and PSD Bank Rhein-Ruhr eG, both headquartered in Düsseldorf, are exploring a combination up to a full merger in open and open-ended talks. A union would create one of Germany's largest cooperative credit institutions with combined total assets of around €18.5 billion. Sparda-Bank West is more than three times the size of PSD Bank Rhein-Ruhr. The background is the ongoing consolidation pressure in the cooperative banking sector – in 2025 PSD Bank Nord and PSD Bank Hannover had already announced a combination. Update (19 Jun 2026): The two institutions declared their merger talks over in a joint statement, saying they could not agree on a common course on key strategic questions; the extraordinary representative assemblies planned for September will not take place (Börsen-Zeitung, 19 Jun 2026).
