The roughly 60-kilometre, heavily used rail line between Recklinghausen and Münster - part of the key corridor from the western Ruhr area via Münster and Osnabrück to Bremen - is to be comprehensively renewed under Deutsche Bahn's "Generalsanierung" programme for its high-performance network. Under the revised timeline confirmed by the federal government and DB on 9 September 2025, construction is now scheduled to begin in 2032 (rather than the 2030 date originally listed), with the full closure itself expected to last around five months. No investment figure has been published yet; the project remains in the planning phase.
