The 370 m Petersberg Tunnel on the Mosel line between Neef and Ediger-Eller, opened in 1879, was widened and relined from February 2017 to December 2019 using the "tunnel-in-tunnel" method, keeping trains running (single-track from 6 May 2017) throughout construction. The enlarged tunnel cross-section allowed the track spacing to be increased from 3.50 m to 4.00 m, with construction costs stated by the contractor at roughly EUR 16 million. The project served as a global pilot for widening tunnels under live electrified rail operation.
