With a ground-breaking on 2 October 2025, Stadtwerke München (SWM) began building the Tram Münchner Norden: tram line 23 is being extended from Schwabing Nord via Neufreimann to Kieferngarten U-Bahn station (about 3.5 km, six new stops), and a second branch will lead to Am Hart U-Bahn station; together they add 5.7 km of new track with twelve stops, which according to the passenger association Pro Bahn will serve the new Neufreimann district with about 15,000 future residents. Total costs are estimated at about EUR 360 million, of which the City of Munich provides EUR 130.5 million and SWM EUR 9.5 million; with a preliminary benefit-cost ratio of 2.61, federal and state funding of up to about EUR 220 million is possible. A bridge over the DB Nordring is to be built from 2026, and the planning-approval documents for the second section, Neufreimann–Am Hart, were due to be submitted in 2025. On 30 September 2026 Munich city council cleared further construction beyond the bridge over the DB northern ring; the Schwabing Nord–Kieferngarten section is now due to open at the end of 2031, and the planning-approval procedure for the branch to the Am Hart U-Bahn station starts from October 2026. The date is a placeholder: only the end of 2031 is given, so 31 December 2031 is used. (LOK Report, 2 Oct 2025 and 30 Sep 2026)
