In 2026 DB InfraGO is building five electronic interlockings between Gießen and Nidda, fully replacing twelve level crossings, adapting ten more and rebuilding Lich and Ober-Widdersheim stations to be step-free. Work starts on 1 March 2026 between Gießen and Hungen; from late June to mid-December 2026 the whole line is closed and buses replace trains. Announced on 12 Dec 2025 (LOK Report, 18 Feb 2026). As of 18 Jun 2026: In the second construction phase from late June to mid-December 2026, DB InfraGO is building the central electronic interlocking in Hungen and renewing the entire track layout around the station, modernising several level crossings between Hungen and Nidda and starting step-free works at Ober-Widdersheim station (Lich continues). RB 46 services between Gießen and Nidda are cancelled from 22 Jun to 12 Dec 2026; the line is due to reopen at the winter timetable change in 2026 (LOK Report, 18 Jun 2026). Update (18 Oct 2026): Because of delayed deliveries and limited skilled labour, the line will reopen in stages: Giessen–Hungen from 13 Dec 2026, Hungen–Nidda only in Q1 2027; replacement buses continue until then. The date is the end of the quarter as a placeholder (DB InfraGO press release, Oct 2026).
