The 11.8 km section of the A49 between the Neuental and Schwalmstadt interchanges opened to traffic on 30 June 2022. It includes the 899-metre Frankenhain tunnel and several valley bridges, closing a long-standing gap in the A49 between Kassel and the A5 (the adjoining Borken–Neuental section had been completed back in 1994). Preliminary construction work on this section began in 2010.
