On 20 July 2026 the shareholders of T-BESS 1 (Luxcara, BKW and a Trianel municipal-utility consortium) took the final investment decision for the 900 MW / 1,800 MWh Waltrop large-scale battery storage project including its substation; final permits had been in place since May 2026. Capacity is split between Luxcara (520 MW), BKW (300 MW) and the utility consortium (80 MW). Construction starts in autumn 2026 with commissioning planned for Q3 2028; according to Trianel, the grid-fee exemption granted by the Federal Network Agency was decisive for the project's economics (second source: Solarserver).
