On 14 December 2025 DB opened the new Herten-Westerholt station on the S 9 together with the expanded Gelsenkirchen-Buer Nord station; according to VRR, the reactivation of the Hertener Bahn is thereby complete. Each station has two 150 m platforms with lifts and is fully accessible, and the S 9 now runs through between Essen and Recklinghausen via Buer without a change of train. The federal government, NRW, VRR and DB invested about EUR 19 million in total. (LOK Report, 14 Dec 2025)
