The funicular's steep section between Obstfelderschmiede and Lichtenhain is closed from 13 July to mid-December 2026; the track bed and haulage rope are being fully replaced, the two bridges refurbished and the rescue path widened. The roughly 100-year-old freight platform is replaced by a new one from Garaventa AG, due to be ready for reopening; DB is investing about EUR 10 million in total. Buses replace the steep section, while the flat section to Cursdorf keeps running. The date is a placeholder: only mid-December 2026 is given, so 15 December 2026 is used (LOK Report, 21 May 2026).
